Daniel in the Lions’ Den

  • Begin by praying together
  • Read Daniel 6

Introduction

King Darius of the Medes took over. Now Daniel stood out from the rest. Darius liked that and looked to have Daniel take over the entire kingdom. Of course, that did not sit well with the other leaders. So, they made a plan to get Daniel in trouble.

Memory Verse

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV) – 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Younger Group (Preschool-3rd) Family Devotional

  1. How many times did Daniel pray? (v:10) 3 times every day.
  2. What was the punishment Daniel faced for breaking the law? (v:16) Thrown into the lions’ den.
  3. What happened to the other leaders after Daniel was rescued from the lions’ den? (v:24) They were thrown into the lions’ den along with their wives and children.
  4. How did Daniel’s obedience to God point others to God? (v:26-27) King Darius wrote a decree that the people must fear and reverence the God of Daniel.

Older Group (4th-Teen) Family Devotional

  1. In what ways do you think Daniel distinguished himself (v.3)? Allow discussions.
  2. The other leaders knew that the only way they could find any basis for charges was to have it go against the law of Daniels God. What commandment (or commandments) was Daniel facing to break if he obeyed King Darius? (Read Exodus 20) Allow discussions.
  3. How did Daniel’s obedience to God point others to God? (v:26-27) King Darius wrote a decree that the people must fear and reverence the God of Daniel.
  4. In the video lesson, there were 3 challenges:
    • How can we distinguish ourselves from the world? Allow discussions. (How we look, how we talk, how we interact/treat others, how we think, our wisdom, etc).
    • Daniel was consistent with his devotionals. He spent time in prayer 3 times every day. Do you have devotionals? If so, what are they? If not, why don’t you start them now – plan out devotionals: prayer time, worship time, and Bible reading time.
    • When Daniel faced this problem, his response was prayer. He probably asked God for wisdom and strength and deliverance. When we face problems we too should pray for wisdom, strength, and deliverance.
